I happened upon the Yelp page for One World SDF. We have a bunch of great reviews on there. Thanks!!! Our overall reviewer rating is 4.5 out of 5 stars. I think the review from "Harmony T." back on 9/30/2007 screwed up our average:
"ONE WORLD CROSSFIT= NARCISSISM
narcissism [nahr-suh-siz-em]
-noun
1. inordinate fascination with oneself; excessive self-love; vanity.
2. Psychoanalysis . erotic gratification derived from admiration of one's own physical or mental attributes, being a normal condition at the infantile level of personality development.
The martial arts and other classes are really good, the Crossfit part has really declined in quality."
2007! Do any of you even remember 2007? I had to go back in the archives and look through the months of August and September. Damn, those were some good times. As far as I can tell, we are having even better times now with three times as many people. I guesss the "quality" of our CrossFit program wasn't all that horrible.
Which one of you pissed off Harmony?
On a serious note, not a lot of people knew much about CrossFit back in 2007. I'm curious to know what made Harmony an expert regarding "CrossFit Quality." What does "CrossFit Quality" mean to you?
Two weekends ago, I was involved in a Facebook thread that had lots of people talking about all the poor quality of CrossFit gyms that are opening up in their neighborhoods. There was also lots of talks about having more quality control regarding CrossFit affiliates.
Personally, I think calling out a gym regarding "quality" is a tough call. There are plenty of gyms I have visited (online or in person) and thought, "Damn that's a dumb workout" or "Damn that is a crazy way to run a group training session" but.... How does one really judge that? Who am I to make that call?
I firmly believe that coaching or owning a CrossFit gym is growing experience. I know Brad will back me up on this. Our gym now is totally different than it was 6 years ago. It's been quite a journey, but I have enjoyed every second of it! I think anyone owning a gym should have the same opportunity One World had over 6 years ago.
I am ready to get involved in a good online discussion about "Quality" and CrossFit. We can do it here or on Facebook. Forget the hater comments. If you can't bring anything thought provoking to the table, leave it at home. I think this is an important issue for both affiliate owners and CrossFitters in general.
What is quality? How do you judge quality? How can you put a "quality control" program into action amongst the affiliate community?

Since I started this blog post out with a blurb about Yelp, it would be awesome if any of you current One Worlders took a second to post a review on our Yelp page. No worries if you don't, I know how busy you all are.

I don't know Freddy...that guy in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance tried to define quality and ended up getting his brain shock treated.
Let's discuss suck-assery. That's much easier to spot.

Fair enough, but does that mean you put a rating on suck-assery?
"We have a four (outta five) suck-assery rating!"
In my opinion, simply pointing fingers at all that is bad doesn't help all that as good.

Quality is so subjective. A sad number of people dig the Any Asshole style workouts, and actually dismissively call strength portions of programming, "warm ups". God forbid a rest period is programmed into the WOD. Cuz you know, it's all about going thru that dying feeling on a daily basis (that's sarcasm).
I get that all the time at my gym (at work, not a Box).

I've read the comments that were not 5 stars. The only thing I can think of is that Crossfit wasn't the way to reach the goals they may have set for themselves. Freddy, I've posted a comment on yelp as well (5 star rating). Nothing but the truth:
(Yelp Comment)
I've been training at this gym for a little over 2 years now. I got a new job around Fremont and did a yelp search for good quality gyms. I found OneWorld Crossfit and thought to myself, what is Crossfit? I came there and the first impression I had was, DAMN, I DON'T THINK I CAN EVER DO THIS!
I'm glad I was wrong! The instructors are nothing short of being awesome! They're so friendly, helped me learn the movements little by little, always practice safety and taught me a lot about technique, controlling your movement to reduce the risk of injury and also to scale the weight to where you're able to challenge yourself but still complete the amount of reps and rounds for the Workout of the Day (aka WOD), but most important of all, they sincerely want to see you succeed. I'm a fairly fit guy looking for something to challenge me and I found it here. When I first started, I never did a dead lift in my life. I started off lifting 65lbs and that was hard for me. Two years later, I reached a personal record of 315lbs from a guy weighing about 170lbs.
Due to career changes, I've moved back to the San Francisco but still go back to One World Crossfit a couple times a week just to workout. Some might ask why? I consider OW Crossfit as part of my extended family. I always look forward visiting great people that have impacted my life in such a positive way and doing a challenging workout! Everyone is always supporting each other. I'm not going to lie, some of the workouts are tough, but people are always cheering you on, giving you that boost you need too succeed.

If you want quality, stop doing crossfit. Crossfit is crap.

I really agree with the growing process of gym ownership. Whether it's quality all depends on whether the gym owner is humble and ready to learn and grow to serve their members, or all up their own ass about how awesome they are and in it for the vanity

Hell! If it weren't for the fact that the tv set and the refrigerator are so far apart, some of you wouldn't get any exercise at all. Funny most people buy the highest quality tv set only to watch the lowest quality tv shows. And the same goes for the choosing the right gym and make the most for their money, but at One World I find that it's all the gym you will ever need, because quality begins in the inside of a person and the owners and staff at One World surely have it and its contagious, that's what make this gym so different than others. You not only learn good habits, good health, and having fun doing it, you'll make good friends that last you a life time, and that some quality life and time that money can't buy! GBO
