See the man in black on the left? He is about to mind fuck everyone in a light blue shirt......
I am attending a class this week that is hosted at the San Francisco Police Academy. The first day of our class was also the first day of a new academy class. The new recruits had to line up in formation and get yelled at by their training officer right in front of our class. Damn, I don’t miss those days.
Oh the memories of my first day in the academy. I remember we had to sit in our assigned seats in the classroom. I didn't know anyone I sat near. We had to stand up and introduce ourselves and tell everyone why we wanted to be police officers. At 34 years old, I was the second oldest guy in the class. Most of the other guys and gals in my class were in there late 20’s or younger. Kid after kid stood up to introduce themself and told the class how they wanted to be a police officer their entire life. I started freaking out. I decided to become a police officer on a whim and ended up getting hired a few months after I started putting in applications. I hadn’t been to school in over 15 years, and the academic requirements for the academy were very strict. I remember just like it was yesterday thinking to myself, “I don’t belong here.”
The first week was tough. Everything was new, and some of it seemed completely overwhelming. I could have quit after that first week and just told people, “ I wasn’t prepared” or “It was too hard.” I could have quit and given some other excuse that anyone hearing would have totally excepted. I gutted the first week out. I worked hard and made the adjustments to the new challenge. In the end, I graduated top of my academy class, and I’ve had a pretty amazing 13 year career since that first day in the academy.
So what does this have to do with One World? It’s January. So many new people have joined the gym. All the others who have come before you can testify to that fact that they know exactly what you are going through. You do your first three intro sessions with Brad. It doesn’t seem so bad. Then you show up to your first group session. You don’t know what to expect. It’s all very intimidating. The workout is harder than those workouts you did in your intro sessions. You have that moment at some point within those first few weeks where you think, “I don’t belong here.”
The choice is yours after that moment. Do you want to do the work and change your life, or do you quit and think about what could have been if you had given the effort? I can tell you firsthand that hard work always rewards you with a great sense of accomplishment.

WORKOUT 2/6/2013

This is how it works. 3, 2, 1...Go! For one minute, you and your partner alternate ball slams. Rest one minute. You and your partner then alternate hand release push-ups while you both attempt to stay in the plank position the entire minute. Rest one minute. For one minute you and your partner alternate jumping air squats. Rest one minute and repeat for a total of three rounds. Total time of workout is 17 minutes. Score total reps.
If you have to do this solo, do 30 work and 30 seconds or rest.

Thank you for the post, Freddy! Yes, we've all been there. For me, the first 3 months was so hard. I remember being exposed to the filthy 50s within a month of being on CROSSFIT, my first pukey might add LOL, good times. Many times I felt like giving up on CROSSFIT, but I was reminded many times that people were in similar situations and that supporting each other goes a long way. Keep at and don't give up! Congrats on taking the first step of changing your lifestyle :-)

Succes comes from knowing that you did your BEST to become the Best that you're capable of becoming, because a successful man is one who can lay a firm foundation with the bricks others have thrown at him. Work hard, be persistent, be enthusiastic always and a little common horse sense you all will go far.

I remember my first WOD. My back tightened up during the warmup. I didnt finish the class. I was so embarrassed. I was thinking uh oh, what did i just. sign up for. Why was everyone so happy, when I was so miserable. I was either going to quit ir become obsessed. I finally get why they were all so happy after the misery of the wod.

Thanks for the post Freddy... I was actually feeling quite bad after Monday's run when I set a record for slow time of the day @ almost 16 min. It was my first mile run in probably about 5 years and I didn't know the way and I quickly fell behind the group. But finally as I approached down Western, Paul and Yang were waiting for me on the One World driveway. It was definitely appreciated and a reminder that even though training my body is my responsibility, there is definitely something great about team encouragement.

Just along the same lines as Freddy's post and the responses, here is a famous quote that sums up the spirit we have. It is a quiz, who said it, where and when? "never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never-in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense".
There is a clue somewhere in this post....

I remember repeating 1st grade 4 times in four different countries by the last time I was almost 9 years old, I knew one day this hell will end, well to make a long story short nothing after that experienced really got me down, plus I was the smartest 1st grader ever.. Funny how life doesn't give you nothing free except the air, everything else you have to earn it! Don't ever give up and don't be afraid to try something new and remember you're NOT ALONE!
