Believe it or not this is almost exactly what happened to me back in 2000. I had my son on my shoulders and was taking him off like I had done a thousand times before and "pop" I collapsed to the ground and was unable to move my legs. I was rushed to the hospital and luckily for me I started to regain movement in my toes about half way there. The doctor says a quarter of an inch more and I would have been permanently paralyzed from the waist down. I have since had surgury to remove the herniated disk and have a permanent metal plate in my neck, but I am almost back to normal and training in Olympic lifting and some cross training for cardio. My heart goes out to him and prayers that maybe one day he can regain some or all of the use of his legs, especially because I know the fear and uncertainty he must be feeling.
