I finally had a chance to sort some pictures out from my Peru trip. Thought I would give you a short write up to share on the blog!
Picture #1 below is my husband (Jack) and I after completing the original Incan trail, 26 miles of amazing beauty! We embraced the most beautiful mountains (some covered in snow), encountered scenic forest routes, visited over 10 archeological ruin sites, and captured the most wonderful views of tunnels, lush clouds, stone paved trails of different shades, lagoons and waterfalls. To top off the whole experience, at the end of the trek you finish up at Machu Picchu, "The Lost City of the Incans", currently a world wonder. Pictures don't do justice to the beauty! It's usually a 4 day hike but we had the option of completing it in 3 days so we opted for that. First day wasn't bad at all, second day was the most challenging and the third day was the most rewarding. We reached the highest peak on the second day which is about 14,000 ft. The air did get thin and the last two hours of the steep hike up the summit was probably the most challenging for all trekkers, (picture #2) they call get it "Dead Women's Pass." I trained on the hills a week before the hike and relied on my CrossFit training to get me in shape for the hike. My CrossFit training definitely got me prepared for the hike. Climbing in altitude to the summit was as familiar as gasping for air in the middle of a WOD.
I was amazed and humbled by the athleticism of the porters. The guys in picture #4 were our porters, locals that carry your camping gear and food for you throughout the trek. They each were carrying 60lbs worth of stuff throughout the whole trek. Not only did they have that much weight on their back's, they lapped all the trekkers. They had to get to the campsites before we arrived to have it all set up for us. I was amazed at their stamina going up the summit and their agility and speed going down steep, wet and rocky downhills (some even wore sandals).
I also managed to get a WOD in a day before we headed back home at a local CrossFit box. The box was on the lower floor of a mall and was surrounded by the ocean!
