Freddy, your posts about self defense always interest me. The misconceptions about self defense are endlessly fascinating to me.

I not as qualified to speak about this as you and Brad are, but I do have some real world experience.

About 8 years ago I came across a thief trying to steal my neighbours car. At the time I had trained about 6 years BJJ and a bit of boxing. What insued was an ugly struggle which involved some BJJ and boxing and a whole lot of wrestling, knees, elbows, headbutts and other horrible stuff i won't mention.

My training helped me for sure but it also opened my eyes to how different a real fight can be compared to training. When there are no rules, no ref's and no help fancy techniques go right out the window and you resort to basics - just like you said.

Great post Freddy! Defending a punch, choke, gun, stick or knife doesn't mean shit if you can't hammer your attacker afterwards. Your defense takes care of the initial danger but your combatives take care of all your subsequent dangers. Work your basics endlessly, "it's better to know better than to know more". Quote from one of my first instructors. And I swear by it.
