Come on guys. Do your research fish oil pills regardless are terrible any way you look at it, here we go. Fish oils in your body (healthy person i'm talking about here no disease) when you eat the concentrated fish pills your body treats them like a steriod, there is a natural path that your body can make with plant omega 3 and microalge omega 3. The microalge is what the fish eat so just bypass the fish and get your omega 3's threw plant sources it is alot easier on your system. The fish oil pills you have to worry about PCB's and multiple other things and the metabolic path in your body will be turned off and it is more powerfull than any pill, because it happens internally. hope that isn't to confusing. check it out.

PCB's are the bigger issue as they are known carcinogens and can only be removed through molecular distillation which only happens with the pharmaceutical grade fish oil I believe. Just like anything else you get what you pay for. I guess if the fish oil was taken right before a meal with adequate protein the mercury would have protein available to bond to.

So glad I went to the Bon Jovi concert instead...HAHA!!

THAT SUCKED!!! But got through it in under 10. Thanks Freddy...I guess. Enjoy the rest of you trip.

Freddy...with a name like "Air Force," I was expecting a walk in the park and a delightful breakfast served half-way through the WOD.

You should call this workout, "Navy Seals on steroids mercilessly flogging defenseless people with medeival weaponry while Green Berets squirt lemon juice in their wounds."

A bit longer...but far more fitting.

I am WRECKED!!!

Awww, man, Ryan S, I just read that thread. Can it be???? Aw, crap! Don't know if ignorance is bliss, but now I'll have to fork over some extra moola for the "real stuff". Stinking Costco.

DARON -- UNFORTUNATELY AUSTIN PROGRAMMED THIS WORKOUT FOR ME THE DAY BEFORE HE PROGRAMMED IT FOR THE MAIN CLASSES. HE ONLY PROGRAMMED IT UP TO THE OVERHEAD SQUATS AND I HAD PUSH PRESS NOT PUSH JERK (UNLIKE FREDDY, I PREFER JERKS OVER PRESSES ANY DAY!!! LOL.) ... I DID IT IN 5:40 UP UNTIL THE OHS. I THINK I COULD HAVE DONE IT IN ABOUT 7:30-7:40. MY LEGS WERE FINE, MY ARMS WERE TOAST!!! 10:57 ISN'T A BAD TIME THOUGH! PROBABLY WOULD HAVE DONE BETTER IF YOU PACED A LITTLE MORE IN THE BEGINNING YEAH? =)

I HATE BURPEES!!! LOL. AND OF COURSE I HAD THEM IN MY WORKOUT TODAY TOO LOL.

Had to chime in again...

Rich - per Robb Wolf (on one of his podcasts) you cannot get mercury poisoning from fish oil since it has to have protein to bind to... other stuff in it though can still cause GI issues.

Daron and everybody else using Kirkland brand... they started pixie dusting their regular fish oil (i.e. not actually putting in a significant amount of DHA/EPA). More discussion and info over here: http://www.cathletics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4885&page=2

Freddy,
I'm a fan of your website and i've never commented before until i seen all the pills? I'm all for them if you have broken something and you need it for pain like that, if that makes any sense. I think that you are maxing your hormones out working out so much and you might not be producing enough Growth Hormone and that is responsible for regenerating tissues, and may i add naturally, especially your joints. I had this problem in the summer i am very active, but in the winter its not as bad but my joints would start aching and i started to do low carb, high veggies and alot of FAT! I will load up on the almond fats are so healthy, they fuel your hormones, they have phytosterols in them, very good for your GH. Try some intermitting fasting too, i know natural detoxification will naturaly nuetralize acid deposits on your joints that develop and eventually when your old, your joints just seize up, fasting will help the inflammation also. Check out a guy called ORI HOFMEKLER, really old guy but he's got something going on, thanks for listing

10 grams Kirkland Brand Fish Oil spread out over 3 meals. Multi-vitamin and Glucosamine, although I might have to invest in some G-Sulfate after reading this post. Hey guys, read this article. When I found out that Ibuprofen was actually counter-productive, I totally ditched it: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/01/phys-ed-does-ibuprofen-help-or-hurt-during-exercise/

Hey Chyna, I totally feel you on the overhead squats. AARRGGH! I was totally jamming up until that point. It also took me around 5 minutes. Stupid burpees were like running through mud at that point. Gutted out 4 per minute after stupid burpees. 10:57 total at 65#. (blush) What was your time?

Just wanted to add to the feed by saying that the fish oil supplements can greatly control inflammation and as a physio I would not recommend the use high dosage NSAIDs for more than 3-7 days. Concerning the fish oils, at dosages higher than 2.5 grams it is smart to go with a pharmaceutical grade oil, which will cost you more, but should give you peace of mind that you're not getting too many contaminants (mercury, PCB's specifically).
Personally, I take 5-10g of pharmaceutical grade fish oil with small amount of GLA, a multivitamin and glucosamine for the old joints. Keep it simple.
Rich

Put me down as a burpee hater.

Can I just say that the Air Force WOD really sucked today?

Fish oil
ZMA
Calcium

X2 on the Glucosamine Sulfate. 500 mg, 3 X day for 3 months and my shoulder was completely healed. Prior to that, it just kept getting worse! Make sure you get the good stuff, Glucosamine Chondroitin is garbage, it wont work. Glucosamine Sulfate does work.

I'm not that big in supplements because my body just doesn't process them very well. Food is always the best way to fuel your body. However, I do take fish oils (pills from costco) and glucosamine (in liquid form). But that's it.

Sorry Freddy. I have to agree with the peanut gallery and suggest you find something else to use besides the pain killers to ease the inflammation.

BTW, I AM IN FOR THE "AIR FORCE" WOD TODAY!

MAXGXL HAS S-ALA IN IT. THE LONG TIME WORD HAS BEEN THAT THE R FORM OF ALA (R-ALA) IS WHAT YOUR BODY PREFERS. BASICALLY, REGULAR ALA IS CHEAP. GO FOR THE BETTER STUFF, R-ALA.

AS OF RIGHT NOW I USE
ZMA
ACETYL L-CARNATINE
VITE D
GLUTAMINE
VITE-C
FISH OIL

MIKE, AWESOME BLOG!

Hey Freddy, I've suffered with aches and pains in my knees for as long as I can remember. I feel your pain brotha and it's no fun. A few months back I started taking glucosamine, as also mentioned by mike above. This stuff rocks! Every now and then I'll get a flare up but its becoming pretty rare. You can get the stuff at any local pharmacy and it's not terribly expensive. Just stay away from those pain killers....they call them killers for a reason!

AIR FORCE ONE WOD ... UGH! BUT DAAAMMNNNN! 3:53 IS NO JOKE! IT TOOK ME ABOUT 5:40 TO FINISH THE OHS ... THIS GUY MUST HAVE BEEN FLYING!!!!!

IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW, YOU HAVE AN BOO-BOO ... LOL.

Freddy the maxx GXL falls right into line with some of the suggested supplementation in the book lights out... It is a must read on Robb's list... Maxx is one of the few supplements that have ALA (alpha lipoic acid) and glutamine in the same product. ALA helps transport fatty acids to the mitochondria of the cell (promotes efficiency of fat burning as energy)... Glutamine is a great way to refill muscle glycogen without refilling liver glycogen ... so its a solid product in those respects as to whether it really increases Glutathione production?? could be marketing, enjoy!! Kick the NSAIDS brother .. they do more damage than good!

Hey Freddy, Your not an old guy until you get to compete in the Masters.

One does not need to be the "Fittest" person around in order to enjoy a high quality of life. Exercise to be your best at living life, not to be the best at exercising.

Freddy - when are you going to stop doing high rep thruster workouts? I noticed the same issue with knee and joint pain doing a lot of high rep CF stuff... nothing since moving onto heavier weights/fewer reps. I think lots of meds to assist with joint pain is far more damaging to your health/fitness/body than doing the high rep workouts is helpful to your health/fitness/body. Not bashing or anything --- just saying... maybe it's coming time for you to move on to heavier (and better) things.

As far as supplements personally I take:
Fish Oil (5-10g/day)
ZMA
Vitamin D
Creatine (works great for some not so much for others)
1 gallon of milk on Workout Days only (definitely don't suggest this for everyone)
I probably need to start taking Vitamin K --- LEO/MIL folks should look into this especially to counteract the anticoagulant effects of fish oil --- there's a good thread on it here (starts discussing that halfway down): http://www.cathletics.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4986

Hey Freddy what's the weight on this? Do pick a weight that you can use for all five?

Hey Freddy,

I'm a tad surprised at the dosages of ibuprofen and acetaminophen you're downing...400mgx3 ibuprofen and 500mgx3 of Tylenol?
Couple of concerns: Main one being you're masking some potential injury, and working THROUGH injury, due to the level of analgesia. This doesn't even really touch on the inhibition of protein synthesis that NSAIDs have.
Secondly, you may be potentiating some immune suppression with your NSAIDs and fish oil; not a huge deal if you aren't sick, but if you get into some overtraining, it could spell disaster. Just saying, brother. Be it ibuprofen, Celebrex, Aleve (naproxen) or Vioxx---they are all NSAIDs that inhibit COX. This are not benign drugs. Listen to Starret, he's a smart cat.

Have you looked into glucosamine, chondroitin, or MSM? I'm way overdue to write an article on joint issues and OTC supplementation, but there's some potential benefit with anti-inflammatory action (specific to the joints) and increased synovial fluid production.

As for myself: Fish oil, Multi-B (preWO), ZMA, and Vit D. Basically, getting what an athlete can't get from whole food.

Is that a torn callous I see.... you should wear gloves... hehe. Your friend, Stacie
