I always get emails from people asking about the pull-up structure we use at One World. As any of our clients can tell you, the structure is rock solid! It does not sway or bend. We've had every bar full with people doing pull-ups and still no problems.
Here is an in depth explanation of how to make your own bomb proof structure. We've moved three times and built this same style structure in numerous incarnations. We whipped our current structure out in about 6 hours.
First, you need a corner. The first post is built off the corner and everything is built out from there. We are fortunate. The walls in this corner are concrete, so we had no need to reinforce the walls. We used a 10' 4x4 post to start the structure. After that we alternated 8' and 10' posts. We hang rings and 10' climbing ropes from the 10' bars. We used a variety of different heights on the 8' post bars to accomodate some of our "vertically challenged" members.
The posts are mounted to the floor with a simple post bracket found at Home Depot. It is mounted to the concrete with one concrete 3/8" anchor bolt. You have to drill out a hole on the bottom of the post to accomodate the bolt head so the post sits flush in the bracket. A few nails hold the post to the bracket.
We use 1" galvanized piping 5' long for all the bars. Home Depot will cut the pipe and thread the ends for a very small service fee. The bars are screwed into flanges and then mounted to concrete with 1/4" anchor bolts and to wood with 1/4" lag bolts.
BTW- We once had a structure that had 6' long bars, but they would bend slightly and that puts a lot of stress on the threads where they attach to the flanges. We make all our structures with 5' bars now. In 5 years, we have never had a threaded end break or crack, but I know of one other gym that had two actually break while someone was on the bar. Inspect your equipment regularly!!!
The final structure! (Pay no attention to Atsushi, the Asian dude with big boobs lying on the floor in a puddle of his own bodily fluid.) Again, I reiterate that because it is built off the corner, there is absolutely no sway in any direction. This structure is awesome, and the costs is only a few hundred dollars.
