In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
And this.....
Detective Charles "Chuck" Dinwiddie - a beloved member of the Killeen (Texas) Police Department and 18-year veteran of the force - died Sunday, clinging to life for two days after being shot at a Killeen apartment.
On Friday morning, Killeen officers began breaching a window to serve a narcotics search warrant for Marvin Louis Guy, 49. Police said Guy opened fire, hitting Dinwiddie and three other officers.
Dinwiddie was shot in the face and spent two days in critical condition at Scott & White Hospital in Temple. The Killeen Police Department announced his death Sunday afternoon.
"Our community has suffered a great loss. Few people have touched the number of lives, in such a meaningful way, as Detective Dinwiddie," Chief Dennis Baldwin stated in a news release. "As a dedicated professional, his service to the Killeen community was with honor, courage and unwavering loyalty. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends during this difficult time."
Two of the officers' lives were saved due to their protective gear. Officer Odis Denton, a nine-year veteran of the department and an eight-year SWAT member, was shot in the thigh. He was listed in good condition Sunday after undergoing surgery at Scott & White.
"My thoughts are that we support the police officers and the families of those who have been injured and killed," Killeen Mayor Dan Corbin said. "We need to pray that the Lord will comfort them in their sorrow and grief."
Dinwiddie was a member of the KPD SWAT team for 15 years.
Corbin said he remembers the officer volunteering his time to serve the community's youth.
"He's just a really good family man and a really good police officer. ... He was a role model for everyone," Corbin said. "The whole community is grieving for the loss of Chuck. He was a valuable member of our community and we'll miss him a lot."
Fort Hood's commander also offered condolences Sunday.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and loved ones of Detective Dinwiddie and with the city of Killeen," Lt. Gen. Mark Milley stated in a news release.
All four officers were members of the Killeen Police Department's Tactical Response Unit and the Bell County Organized Crime Unit. They were shot while serving a warrant about 5:30 a.m. Friday in the 1100 block of Circle M Drive in southwest Killeen.
Guy and a 50-year-old woman, whose identity was withheld by police pending further investigation, are both in custody. Guy was charged with three counts of attempted capital murder. His bond was set at $3 million.
Dinwiddie's body will be escorted to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas today for an autopsy, police said.
Funeral arrangements for Dinwiddie were pending Sunday, according to the news release. He is survived by a wife and two children.
He is the second Killeen SWAT officer killed in the line of duty in less than a year.
Officer Robert "Bobby" Hornsby, 32, died July 14 from gunshot wounds during a SWAT standoff in Killeen.
Hornsby's wife, Kimberly, is currently on day three of the 2014 Police Unity Tour, which involves biking from Florham Park, N.J., to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.
"Tomorrow we ride for two," Hornsby wrote on Facebook. "Our hearts are still split between here and Killeen. We will finish strong for Bobby and get back to our police family as soon as possible."
Kinda weird to have a job where you know that their are people that wouldn't blink an eye about killing you while you do that job. If you see a police officer this week, just thanks. Nothing more. It goes a long way.
